Back in Stride Again – My Effective Volunteer Strategy
Every moment of every day we change and evolve. A lot of times, the evolution occurs slowly, inch by inch. As we change, so do our interests.
I must admit that my interests have changed quite a bit over the past few years. Ten years ago I was a stay-at-home mom. My volunteer activities reflected my stay-at-home mom interests and focus at that time. Over the past few years I transitioned into a work-outside-of-the-home mom. Therefore, my interests changed. As my interests changed, my volunteer activities were no longer as fulfilling as they used to be. My passions changed, yet my volunteer activities had not changed.
You see, I view volunteerism as a two-way street. I give back the strengths related to my current passions. The recipient receives free access to those strengths. This creates a fulfilling win/win scenario. When my interests changed a few years back, I was in an unfulfilling lose/win scenario. This wasn’t great for anybody! Houston, we have a problem.
So, guess what I did? I switched courses. I unloaded those volunteer activities that didn’t work for me. What did I do with that free time? You guessed it! I picked up volunteer activities that reflected who I currently am. I once again feel motivated and ready to contribute my skills towards helping out others. I feel as though a huge weight has been lifted. I am happy. I am fulfilled. My life has been simplified.
What are you going to start saying no to? What will that create room for?
